Influenza season

A diet rich in yogurt, garlic, fruits and lean meat can bolster your immune system. While an annual flu shot is the best weapon for keeping the bug at bay, these foods contain nutrients that help fight off errant germs that elude the vaccination and the other standard weapons for stopping the spread of flu and colds – frequent hand washing and coughing into your elbow or sleeve. Nonfat and low-fat yogurt and other cultured dairy products in their nonfat/low-fat versions contain probiotics, “good bacteria” similar to what is normally found in your body. Probiotics may help your body defend against the flu and other respiratory ailments, and low-fat/nonfat foods are not full of “bad” LDL cholesterol and calories. The Dairy Council of California says, when shopping for these products, check for the “live active culture” seal which lets you know that what you are buying does in fact contain probiotics.

Happy Holidays to All and our best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year

Ergonomics – Ergonomics – Ergonomics. Get used to it because I’m afraid we are in for a lot of talk in the next three years. Here’s the rub! AIHA and many others have long supported an ergonomics standard. But AIHA and many others had some concern about the proposal overthrown by Congress back in 2001. Now, the administration says they will address this issue in the next three years and industry says it is gearing up for a fight on the issue. AIHA's Aaron Tippler from the Hill

      John Howard to Head NIOSH

We’ve just learned that Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will be announcing later this afternoon that John Howard, MD has been selected to lead the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Dr. Howard headed NIOSH for six years during George W. Bush’s administration, and both the American Society of Safety Engineers and the American Industrial Hygiene Association appealed unusccessfully to then-CDC Director Julie Gerberding to extend his tenure.

ETC is pleased to announce that Dr. Tom Leamon has joined the ETC Scientific Advisory Board (SAB).

    • Frequent hand-washing

    • "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face

    • *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you cannot use salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

    • Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at cleaning, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* Remember to wash your hands after with soap and water.

    • *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (oranges and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption. 6.* Drink as many warm liquids as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

ETC awarded unprecedented, multi-year contract for major ergonomic initiative with the United States Postal Service. The initial results are in.
